A trip to the state capitol gave us an understanding of how our congress works, insight into the tough budget issues that this session will face, and a chance to see the beauty of our state capitol buildings when the day ended with a tour. |
State Reports... Members of the Washington Financial Aid Association
have been very busy in the past few months and as WFAA
President this year I would like to express my gratitude to
each WFAA member and associate member who has given
so willing of his or her time to make all these things possible. The Early Awareness Committee provided, to many high schools students and their parents, publications and an opportunity to ask questions about financial aid at the National College Fairs that took place in our state. Many thanks go to all those volunteers that participated in this mammoth event. The Ethnic Awareness Committee had some hard choices to make this year, as they determined the recipients of our WFAA Scholarships. Ron Noborikawa, Fund Development Chair, and Anita Steele, for Membership, have once again exceeded the prior year's numbers. Our newsletter editor, Fred Carter, produced a great newsletter with many wonderful articles and pictures, Rick Sinclair produced the annual estimated student budget upon which our schools rely each year, and the Electronic Services Committee is taking flight after recently being created. The Training Committee has provided an additional training opportunity this year on personality types and customer service (as well as other things) with Steve Morgan that was well attended, very funny and life changing. In January, Tim Henning, Vice President for Legislation, in conjunction with the Higher Education Coordinating Board, hosted a trip to the state capitol for the WFAA Executive Committee and any WFAA members who wished to join us. We were able to meet with several congressional staffers that work for the House and Senate Higher Education Committees, the House Appropriations Committee, the Senate Higher Education Committee, and the Governor's Office of Financial Management. The trip gave us an understanding of how our congress works, insight into the tough budget issues that this session will face, and a chance to see the beauty of our state capitol buildings when the day ended with a tour. Lastly, east side WFAA members in conjunction with EdFund and US Bank had their annual "Mallenium" event where financial aid administrators set up tables at the two main malls in Spokane for students and their families to stop by during the weekend and ask questions about financial aid and the application process. The turn out was the highest it has been. Thanks goes to Tim Henning, EdFund and US Bank for providing the leadership and support needed for this annual event. |
