The evening's entertainment was speechless and what a promotion for the 2003 WASFAA Conference; Navigating Our Course, in Honolulu, Hawaii! |
WASFAA Happenings ... The conference started off with a baked potato bar (A must in Idaho!) and a group of young, talented fiddlers; Idaho's Junior Jammers! The audience was in awe of their talent and began to tap their feet and move their heads with their rhythm. As if the Idaho's Junior Jammers was not uplifting enough, we listened and viewed Stacy Allison's adventure to the summit of Mt. Everest. Having seen the little snow caves that she lived in for several weeks...I will never again complain about working in the piles of paper stacked up around my desk and floors! The next day of the conference, we heard the many voices of Dr. Carmen Tafolla. She presented cultural diversity using her perspective and experiences as a one-woman dramatic performer. Although most of her "acts" were focused on the Hispanic/Mexican culture, I experienced some of the same things that Dr. Tafolla's characters experienced. We also heard from Cruzita Lucero; NASFAA National Chair, and Dallas Martin; NASFAA President, about their vision of where NASFAA and Congress is headed. The evening's entertainment was speechless and what a promotion for the 2003 WASFAA Conference; Navigating Our Course, in Honolulu, Hawaii! Who would have known that there was a Hula club at Boise State University! The dancers reminded me of home with their dance and music! Then, to see the performance of the Oregon Association and Montana Ballet and Logging Company! Who would have known that financial aid issues and processes could be construed as entertainment! Finally, we danced the night away to the Hoochie Coochie Men Band! Then, the conference came to a close. Addalou passed on the gavel to Catherine; and, in turn, Catherine passed on a WalMart vest to Addalou (how many more days till retirement?). Before people ran off to the airport, friends from different states hugged each other good-bye, vowed to stay better in touch during the year and hoped to see each other at the next conference. What a sight! To see everyone hugging new and old friends, wishing each other well, and telling each other to call anytime you needed help or guidance. Attending the WASFAA Conferences are rejuvenating and comforting...who else could you talk to about R2T4, 30-day disbursements, and the idea of another reauthorization and actually understanding and empathizing with you. To all my new and old friends, "Aloha!" And I hope to see you in 2003 at the Hawaii Conference! |
