WASFAA Happenings ... "Financial Aid - After hours". I figured I had enough black mail material to ruin or at least drastically slow down a few careers. But I decided to pick another subject, especially since I was heavily persuaded by a few big guys in burlap trench coats. They told me to pick another story if I knew what was good for me. I did not know how to take that, after all Boise is a beautiful, hospitable, quaint city. As I was trying to figure what else could I possibly write about, it came to me? While walking down the aisles looking at the various services that the vendors were offering. I would write about the sponsors and how their generous contributions make up the Fund Development. The Fund Development pays for things that the cost of the registration would not necessarily cover; such as the ice cream social, evening functions and the train trolley tour. And how about all those goodies and supplies that we share with our colleagues, who are back in the office making sure that every thing runs smoothly. Obviously this is beneficial for all those involved: the sponsors, the educational institutions, and ultimately our students. The interaction allows us to know the current products and services that the sponsors have in order for us to share that information with the students. This in turn, allows the student to choose what service is best for them and their situation. Below is a list of all the exhibitors and sponsors of the WASFAA 2002 conference. The sponsors had me thinking about money in general and I became curious as to how WASFAA's 2002 budget was derived. Steve Herndon prepared the budget. The treasurer's report shows that WASFAA had an income of $407,125. Out of that, the Fund Development is $154,500 or 37.95% of the total income budget. This Fund Development provides funding for all the fine details of producing a conference. I had the opportunity to interview Kay Soltis. I asked her what expenses make up the Fund Development. Kay said the Fund Development consists of the following: Conferences. It could cover some or all of; breaks, lunches, dinners, social activities, train trolley tour, administration of training, printings of the mailings, and notification of members. Advertising in the newsletters. Summer Institute-speakers, administration, materials for attendees, printings, shirts, and various activities. Management/Leadership Institute -training for upper management. It covers speakers, administration, materials for attendees, printings, shirts, and various activities. NASFAA/WASFAA training As you can see the Fund Development is crucial, without the vendors it would be very difficult for WASFAA to be run effectively. We probably would not have as much fun networking. Even though there is great content in the information sessions, the conferences would be a little drier and not quite as exciting with all the extras the Fund Development helps provide. Let us face it, how excited can we truly get about financial aid issues? ![]() |
