Our Spring meeting will be held in mid-March, dates and location still to be determined. |
State Reports ALASFAA's Fall conference was held the week of October
22nd in Anchorage. We started off with the two-day
Department of Education's Fiscal Management
Workshop, which was attended by approximately 20
Business Office and Financial Aid folks from seven of the
postsecondary institutions in Alaska. On a scary note - most
of the Business Office folks attending said that they
had never seen a Blue Book before!! Fortunately, everyone
now has several copies. On Wednesday, the 24th, Don Black presented this Fall's NASFAA/WASFAA training. We had 24 Financial Aid and lender folks attend, and we are all thrilled with our disks! Everyone left the training with a renewed commitment to actually compile a policy and procedures manual. We concluded the ALASFAA conference on Thursday and Friday with a number of updates and sessions on topics ranging from identity theft to electronic signatures. We had our first ever Alaskan ELM Client Services meeting on Friday afternoon, and we hosted an Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education Roundtable Workshop on the proposed changes in the Alaska Student Loan regulations, also on Friday afternoon. The Roundtable Workshop and the ACPE update were both well attended as a large number of folks from within and outside Alaska are concerned about the effects of ACPE becoming a federal lender, beginning with the 2002-2003 academic year, and the current ASL program being replaced by the unsubsidized Alaska Supplemental Education Loan program. Our Spring meeting will be held in mid-March, dates and location still to be determined. In preparation, we have a committee reviewing our constitution and by-laws and will most likely make some changes that will make matters less open to confusion by our members. Our Association has a new website, located at http://www.wasfaa.org/alaska/. Check it out if you have a chance - it's not perfect yet, but it looks great! Thanks to Peter Miller for all of his hard work!! |
