NAFAA members received information regarding the nomination and election process of NAFAA officers for 2002-03. Election results will be announced at our next state meeting to be held at the WASFAA conference site in Boise, Idaho on Sunday, April 7 at 8:45 am.

How often have we seen students that we wish we could help in some way because we see that they have a high remaining need, they are dealing with unusual family circumstances but we ran out of priority funding? Well, NAFAA awarded two $500 scholarships to college students within our state that seem to fit this category. The scholarship winners are Susan Lopez of Great Basin College and Sara Resone of UNLV.

The State of Nevada has allocated $95,819 for a two-year period to assist our nursing students. Though these funds are being awarded in the form of a loan, it will provide additional money at a low interest rate similar to the Perkins Loan to help nursing students with the cost of attendance. This nursing loan program is partially funded from the tobacco lawsuit money received by our state.

Truckee Meadows Community College has begun the disbursement of a new Financial Aid e-newsletter. The first issue went out to 150 Millennium Scholars the end of December and at the end of January 2,300 financial aid applicants received the electronic newsletter. TMCC has hired Ruth Scheel as their Student Development Specialist/Student Employment. Ruth previously worked at the University of Nevada, Reno with a background in many different areas of financial aid. Ruth replaces Sharon Wurm, who is now the Coordinator of Financial Aid Systems and Student Employment. Renee Baker, another employee at TMCC who also serves as NAFAA Scholarship Committee Chair, has had her duties and responsibilities expanded to include being a part-time financial aid officer. Congratulations to Ruth, Sharon and Renee!

Finally, since our last report EdFund staff provided a very upbeat and informative one-day workshop for loan administrators at the newest hotel in Reno called the Sienna. The attendees realized that there is always something new to learn.
