Editorial Reflections...
Up Close and Personal
by Judy Saling, Co-Editor
Oregon Institute of Technology

Up close and personal, that is how Addalou Davis operates. She is extremely interested in others and an interesting person as you will find during her year as President of WASFAA.

Addalou is one of those people who carries her own sunshine around with her. That is why she and her husband are contemplating retiring in Astoria, Oregon. The northern Oregon coast with its fog and rain that she loves is a considerable distance from the sunshine and warmth of the Sacramento area where Addalou currently resides. Not to fear, however, Addalou has carefully calculated that she can not only fulfill her duties as President, but also those of Past President before she flies off to retire from our glorious profession. If you ask her, she can tell you the exact number of days remaining until her "freedom flight."

Addalou is Director of Financial Aid at McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. She began there in 1963. You can imagine the changes she has dealt with in that length of time. Addalou is involving Cindy Bogue, her Assistant Director, in more training opportunities, grooming her to help fill the void when retirement day rolls around.

Denny, Addalou's husband of 33 years, is an Administrative Law Judge for the State of California. He is also a licensed pilot. He and Addalou live in a community that allows them to taxi their own Beechcraft Debonair (called a Debbie) right up to their house. In addition to their love of flying, Addalou and Denny share a passion for vintage cars. When possible, they head to classic car shows where they display their 1982 380 SL Mercedes Benz. It fits that a gal who loves vintage cars also would prefer a hamburger over any other meal. Yes, she will have fries and a cherry coke with that!

Addalou and Denny met at a Community College in Interclub Counsel and their storybook tale has flourished ever since. They have a daughter, Debi, who is currently living in Japan where she teaches English. Addalou visited her this past winter which turns out to be extremely good timing. Debi is moving to England in August where she will attend the University of Surrey-Roehampton for a double major of Masters in Cultural Anthropology and of Ballet Studies.

Their son, Derek, is currently sampling community colleges throughout the state. He's interested in Fire Science and/or Forestry, but has to combine that with the right opportunities for skateboarding or snowboarding - his two passions.

Six years ago, Addalou confesses to "burning out" and was able to take the entire summer off to travel to Israel and participate in a dig through a University of California, San Diego program. Addalou, Debi , and a friend of Debi's spent 5 weeks in the Negev Desert near Beersheba digging for artifacts. This was followed by 2 weeks of intense bagging, tagging, and filing of their finds at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. Addalou stayed in a "youth" hostel with all the other youths and had a ball.

Those of us in financial aid are fortunate for her rejuvenation and that the flame for her profession was rekindled. Addalou has a great zest for life and will take on most challenges. We can look forward to an action packed year with Addalou at the helm of WASFAA for 2001-02. (Please take the time to meet Addalou as she visits each of our states.)
