State Updates...
Washington Update
Lana Walters, WFAA Past President
www.wfaa.org/

The 2000-2001 academic year is quickly coming to a close. On my campus we are compiling year-end reports, disbursing the last of financial aid awards, scheduling staff summer vacations, and saying good-bye to students until fall semester. (This is one advantage of the semester system.) In addition to closing another year, we are preparing for another school year by packaging, verifying, revising, and revising again students' aid packages. And so it, also, goes with my responsibilities as President of WFAA and Washington State representative on the WASFAA Executive Council.

It has been a great year! Yes, it really has. The opportunity to work with fellow WFAA & WASFAA members has been a rewarding and "growing" experience. Our colleagues are hardworking individuals with strong feelings and concerns for the financial aid profession and most importantly, our students.

WFAA is another year older (31 years old in June) and new leaders have been elected for 2001-2002. The result of WFAA's election is as follows:
President-Elect Mary Edington, Green River Community College
Vice-President for Training Rachelle Sharpe, Green River Community College
Vice-President for Ethnic Diversity James Flowers, Everett Community College
Secretary Terri Johnson, Walla Walla Community College

The newly elected members will join President Wendy Olson, Whitworth College; Treasurer Karen Driscoll, Spokane Falls Community College; Vice-President for Legislation Tim Henning, Gonzaga University; and the new and continuing committee chairs and representatives who make up the Executive Committee. WFAA members, please, take the time to email, call, or write to the members of the Executive Committee with your support during the next year.

WFAA's last event of the year will be the third annual transition retreat June 14 & 15 at Dumas Point Center, Federal Way. This has proven to be a great experience for the "old" and "new" committees to plan for WFAA's future. The joint committees will discuss the different responsibilities for each position and this year the by-laws will be reviewed and updated.

Mark your calendars for the 2001 WFAA Conference to be held in Spokane, October 10-12! Join President Wendy Olson, Whitworth College, for our annual meeting. The conference committee is up and running with planning for a great conference. See ya' there!
