The best answer of the day was, of course, "It depends."

Boise, Idaho was the staging point for the 2001 WAFSAA Summer Institute Basic Track Training. Boise State University hosted the event and the participants lived like college students for the five and a half-day intense financial aid training, sleeping in the dorms and eating in the cafeteria (erroneously called a "cafe").

As Boise was also involved in their annual River Festival, the town was already overflowing with out-of-towners. The location of the festivities being "next door" to BSU, the Summer Institute participants were treated to a close-up view of the closing fireworks display Sunday night.

Training started in earnest on Monday morning and the pace didn't let up until Wednesday afternoon when the trainees were sent out on their own to do "field research". To some this was floating down the Boise River on inner tubes and rafts. Some checked out the downtown area, visited the museum and at least one visited the zoo in the neighboring park.

Several different faculty members, all knowledgeable enough to ask the representative from the Department of Education when questions from the trainees stumped them, presented the training sessions. The best answer of the day was, of course, "It depends." Some presenters were more animated than others, and one was reminded to "breathe" more than once. In the evenings, movies on the big screen television in Chaffee Hall relaxed the saturated brain.

There was serious effort, fun, confusion and clarification. The training provided was concise, clear and, most importantly, required for the successful spending of federal student aid. All in all, the heartfelt desire to assist students in achieving education made the week well worth the effort.
