At this writing, the Oregon association members are looking forward to our annual summer drive-in workshop on July 31st. As association president, I'm wondering why the workshop co-chairs, Bert Logan, University of Oregon, and Michele O'Leary, Oregon Student Assistance Commission, are planning to have me dress in an Elvis costume. Hmmm, I didn't bargain for that when I took the gavel this year!

Our annual conference committee is off to a running start under the leadership of Sue Gano from Oregon Health and Sciences University. Sue has a great committee so our annual event, to be held at Salishan in 2002, should be another great conference.

Our executive board is tackling a couple of tough issues this year. We will look at our membership policy and we've recommended a small increase in annual association dues. There are a couple of special issues committees this year. One, chaired by Kate Peterson at Oregon State, will look at developing a statewide consortium agreement. In the last few years, we have seen several co-enrollment agreements between 4-year schools and community colleges develop. Another special issues committee will look at the merit vs. need programs. Elizabeth Bickford, from the University of Oregon, will chair this committee. It is clear that a growing number of states are opting for merit based grant programs. In the Oregon legislature this year, there was a bill (that did not make it out of committee) to divert some of our state need grant funding to merit based program. As we move towards reauthorization, perhaps Elizabeth's committee can develop data that will be useful.
