President's Report
by WASFAA President Addalou Davis, McGeorge School of Law

The year is off to a great start!
We held our second Executive Council meeting in beautiful downtown Boise. What a great place! The hotel is beautiful and the staff there is wonderful. We started the night before with a marathon (would you believe I had to kick them out of my room at 11:30 because I was tired!!) Fiscal Planning meeting (thank you very much Youlonda Copeland-Morgan). We all feel assured that the finances of WASFAA are in wonderful hands with Steve Herndon writing the checks and Youlonda heading up fiscal planning. We will be reviewing our budget process, the status of our asset reserves, and updating our fiscal policies and procedures during this year and will keep the membership informed about those processes.

We attended the closing banquet for the Summer Institute and let me tell you, those people were having WAY too much fun!! After a week of hard study and dedication to need analysis training, R2T4, regulations, and other really fun stuff, they relaxed and had a good time at their banquet. Those of us who didn't spend the entire week were wondering about this Lizard Liberation Army, but they identified themselves and returned the wounded lizard (stuffed animal all you who would worry that this is for real) to its rightful owner (Jack Millis or was it Verleen?). We could tell that the students really loved their faculty and everyone will go back to their campus with renewed vigor and love of the financial aid field.

Our next meeting will be in Salishan, Oregon November 2nd and 3rd. All WASFAA members are invited to attend (at their own expense) if they want to see their elected officials in action. Members are also encouraged to contact council members if they would like to have something put on the agenda for discussion.

Well, whoever said that we are lucky to work in a school because we get the summers off never worked in financial aid. We are closing down 00-01 and starting up 01-02 and we never have a busier time. If you are one of the offices where your boss actually lets you take a vacation during the summer, I hope you have a wonderful time and return refreshed and ready to go in the Fall. I, personally, have been dealing with one student for almost three days solid about whether he is work-study qualified or not. There is always one, but the other 99% are the ones that we come to work for, right?

Have a great summer.
