AASFAA: Arizona
by Howard Fischer, President

There has been a lot of activity in the state of Arizona recently and it doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon.

As was mentioned in the last update, the Arizona association lost a long time friend and President-Elect when John Medley passed away in December. We just completed a special election and are happy to announce that Phil Schroeder from Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona is next years President-Elect. He's not going to have a lot of time to train and plan but we know he's got a lot of support and will do a terrific job.

Arizona's 4th Annual College Goal Sunday was held on February 13th and was very successful. We had 18 sites and helped over 2300 students. Although we don't have all of the specifics yet, the amount of television, newspaper and radio advertising we received was impressive. In addition, I heard that some of our local financial aid professionals were interviewed and were so enamored with the spotlight that they are thinking of changing careers (just kidding...after all, what could be more glamorous than being a financial aid professional?).

Our financial aid hotline also received 836 calls between January 5 and February 16. Not surprising, 635 of the calls came in during the two weeks in February leading up to College Goal Sunday with 308 of those calls coming in on February 12 and 13 (can you imagine that students would wait until the last minute to take care of financial aid?).
