President's Report
by WASFAA President Doug Severs, Idaho State University
On The Road Again!
This is the time of the year when the WASFAA President hits the road and
begins visiting state conferences. I kicked off the state meetings by
attending the IASFAA conference in beautiful Post Falls, Idaho. If you are
not familiar with Post Falls, it is a small town in northern Idaho near Coeur
D'Alene. The Idaho Association took us for a riverboat ride on the Spokane
River where we had a leisurely lunch with beautiful scenery. They had some
great sessions and evening entertainment of an auction of school gift
baskets and vendor gifts. IASFAA was able to raise $500 for a scholarship to
help an IASFAA member attend the WASFAA conference in San Jose.
Thanks IASFAA for this fun way to support WASFAA!
The weekend after the IASFAA conference I headed to Leavenworth,
Washington, for the WFAA meeting. Leavenworth is about a two-hour drive
east from Seattle and is located in the Cascade Mountain Range. This was an
anniversary conference as WFAA was celebrating 30 years of association. To
celebrate, they had a game show as the evening entertainment that featured
questions from the 70's, 80's and 90's. The conference also featured a political
discussion by representatives from the Gore and Bush campaigns.
On to Alaska! After the end of the WFAA conference, I headed back to
Seattle to catch a plane to Alaska. The ALASFAA state meeting began the
Thursday after the WFAA conference ended. The ALASFAA conference was
located in Girdwood, which is 44 miles south of Anchorage. The conference
was held at the beautiful Alyeska Resort. It looks like a good place for us to
hold our Advanced Track training . . . in their off season, of course. I am sure
the Alyeska room rates in season would be a little out of our ballpark. The
things that stood out for me at this conference were that Richard Tombaugh
came and gave a session on the history of NASFAA and that a representative
from Merrill Lynch in Anchorage gave a great session on the new College
Savings Plan. Also, the food was tremendous . . . they had an evening dinner
that offered soup, salads, seafood and prime rib. I also was able to attend the
first half of the WASFAA/NASFAA training that Don Black and Dave Allen
were presenting before heading home to prepare for our WASFAA Executive
Council meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona.
I want to thank Cheryl Anderson from IASFAA, Lana Walter from WFAA
and Peter Miller from ALASFAA for their hospitality during my visits.
Next, on to the Arizona and Nevada meeting in warm Laughlin, Nevada,
and then in December to the CASFAA meeting in San Diego. It is nice that
the WASFAA region has such diverse climates that I can attend state meetings
in the south while it is getting really cold in our northern states.
