Nevada State Update
by NAFAA President Al Camp,
Western Nevada Community College
www.tmcc.edu/finaid/nafaa/nafaaweb.html

Welcome to the 2000-2001 school year. We in Nevada are busy preparing for what looks to be a very exciting year. We are now gearing up for the first year of our new Millennium Scholarship Program which awards up to $10,000 in scholar-ships to Nevada High School graduates who complete their high school training with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. If they qualify, they have up to eight years to complete their training. We expect the number of Nevada High graduates who attend Nevada's state schools to steadily increase over the next 8 years as each new graduating class is added to the Millennium Scholarship pool.

With this expected growth, all of the schools who provided information for this article report new academic programs, new facilities, new personnel, or all of the above. We at Western Nevada Community College are welcoming an old friend to our staff. Laura Whitelaw, NAFAA President-Elect has left Sierra Nevada College to join our staff. Truckee Meadows Community College reports the addition of three new staff members. NAFAA wants to welcome Patricia Barnett, a Program Assistant working in student loans and scholarships, Kara Dunn, an Administrative Assistant working in file management, and Kathleen Taylor, a Program Assistant working in student employment. TMCC also reports that they are actively searching for a Financial Aid Systems Analyst. The University of Nevada, Reno reports the addition of four new staff members. NAFAA would like to welcome Ruth Scheel, Employment Coordinator, Debra Buringrud, Financial Aid Advisor, Renee McCloud, Financial Aid Advisor, and Johann Springer, Systems Coordinator. UNR also reports that their new Student Services Building is complete and that they expect to move in the first week in August. I join with all those who have experienced such a move, to wish them good fortune. It's extremely hard to pick up and move your entire office three weeks before your fall term starts. Great Basin College reports that they have just been granted approval to offer some Bachelor of Applied Science degrees and Sierra Nevada College reports they will offer a new Bachelor of Nursing degree in association with St. Mary's Hospital in Reno.

Let me remind everybody that the joint Arizona/Nevada Conference will be held at the Flamingo Hilton in Laughlin, Nevada, November 15-17, 2000.

We hope to see many of you there.
