WASFAA's DISTANCE LEARNING COMMITTEE
by Jack Johnson

(first in a series of articles concerning Distance Ed issues)

At the WASFAA Annual Conference in Seattle last month the Executive Council, under the leadership of President Ted Malone, met to review the critical issues surrounding distance learning. Because of the numerous scenarios regarding the electronic delivery of education now being introduced, it is clear that WASFAA and its membership must be prepared to support new distance learning concepts as they "come-on-line". With this in mind, a Task Force on Distance Learning was formed.

The Task Force will be comprised of three members and will be chaired by Jack Johnson. Jack has a long history of working with distance learning issues, and currently writes consortium agreements for Eastern Oregon University in the capacity of consultant. Two additional members will be appointed to the Task Force. The Task Force will provide WASFAA with a group of well-rounded professionals with excellent credentials in the distance learning field. If you have experience in distance learning and wish to be considered for appointment to the Task Force, e-mail your inquiry and information regarding your experience to: johnsonj@eou.edu.

The Task Force's objective is to represent WASFAA at the national level on critical issues surrounding distance learning and to ensure that such issues receive proper consideration, as perceived by WASFAA membership. Jack attended the first Roundtable on Student Aid for Distance Learners held on May 2-4 at Denver. The meeting assembled together knowledgeable professionals throughout the nation who reviewed current barriers facing institutions in providing financial aid to distance learners. The purpose of the meeting was to develop new statutory and regulatory concepts which will ease the burden of providing financial aid to distance learners. A report which outlines the events and proposals of the Roundtable will appear in the next WASFAA newsletter.

The Task Force will keep the Officers and membership of WASFAA informed of current events regarding distance learning through a regular column in the WASFAA newsletter.
