WASFAA Ethnic Diversity Scholarship Program
Marsha Dupree, Chair, WASFAA Ethnic Diversity Action Committee

The WASFAA Ethnic Diversity Action Committee is pleased to announce the 1999 WASFAA Conference scholarship recipients. The five scholarship recipients listed below attended the WASFAA Conference at the Paradise Point Resort in San Diego, California:

  • Lily Alvarez, Financial Aid Program Assistant II at Community College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, NV
  • Vicky Cabezas, Financial Aid Counselor at California State University, Long Beach in Long Beach, CA
  • Laurie Franklin, Financial Aid Advisor at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR
  • Rita Garza, Financial Aid Coordinator at California Western School of Law in San Diego, CA
  • LaRon Johnson, Financial Aid Analyst at Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, CA

The five recipients attended the WASFAA Conference Newcomers' Orientation and Breakfast, met with the members of the Ethnic Diversity Action Committee (EDAC) and even participated in the EDAC conference session on "Understanding Each Other." The scholarships provided an opportunity for these ethnic minority financial aid professionals to increase their knowledge about financial aid through the various workshops offered at the conference and through their interactions with other professionals in their field. All of the recipients had never attended a WASFAA Conference or a WASFAA Summer Institute, and would not have had the opportunity to attend this year's conference without the support of the WASFAA Ethnic Diversity Scholarship Program.

As we reflect back over the past three decades that WASFAA has been an organization, we can see the commitment WASFAA has made to provide opportunities for professional development and support in the area of diversity.
