SERVICE PROJECT

The conference committee will be collecting books for the “Books for Kids” program sponsored by Willamette Writers. Books for Kids is a program administered by Willamette Writers, Inc., a non-profit, tax-exempt Oregon corporation led by volunteers. The program’s goal is to encourage and support literacy by providing books, free of charge, to disadvantaged children and teenagers through regional social service agencies and organizations. In 2003, the program donated more than 16,000 new and used books to almost 50 agencies and organizations in Oregon and southwest Washington. The Books For Kids program strives to encourage and support literacy by providing appropriate books to as many disadvantaged young people as possible because many times a book may be the only friend a kid has.

So be prepared to bring a book or purchase one while you are at the conference to donate to the Books for Kids program. This could be your excuse to visit the famous Powells Bookstore in downtown Portland! Thank you for your attention and I look forward to seeing all of you in the City of Roses next April! J

Full details on the Books For Kids program can be found on the Willamette Writers web site: http://www.willamettewriters.com/books-for-kids.htm.
